The Anglican Pro-Cathedral of St. Paul was commissioned by the Dowager Queen Adelaide the widow of King William IV after she had visited Malta. The limestone cathedral was built between 1839 and 1844 in the Neo-classical style and designed by architect William Scamp.
On the north side the cathedral features a portico with Ionic order columns. The east side has both Ionic Columns and similar pilasters. The landmark feature of the church is a 65 meter high steeple adjacent to Marsamxett Harbor which is a prominent feature of the Valletta skyline.
On February 9, 2017 a project to restore the cathedral and the steeple was launched with the aim of collecting €3,000,000. The church building is listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands.
