The Carondelet Branch was built in 1908 funded by a 1901 Carnegie grant. The grant to St. Louis was for $1 million and was one of the largest grants. The grant was used partially or in whole finance the construction of six branch libraries along with the main downtown library. This branch library opened in 1908 and was designed by architect E. Preisler in a classic Ionic style. The building continues to serve as a branch library building.
