The minor basilica and convent of San Pedro, built by the Society of Jesus in 1568, are one of the most important religious complexes of the historic center of Lima. The church was consecrated in 1638 with the assistance of viceroy Conde de Chinchón. It is administered by the religious order of the Jesuits. It is also the national sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The current temple is the product of the importance that Lima had as a metropolis of New Castile and because the Jesuits thirsted for an architectural jewel worthy of the order. They took as their model the temple of Gesù in Rome. In the atrium was the old cemetery, now there is a cross instead; this atrium has also served as a theater.

The altarpieces restored from 2001 by the Spanish Cooperation Agency, are very beautiful, including San Francisco de Borja, San Ignacio de Loyola, the Virgen de la O and the Niño Jesús de Huanca.
