Byla postavena mezi lety 1907 až 1912 a její prvotní využití melo být, jako zásobárna vody pro budoucí plavební kanál spojující Dunaj, Odru a Labe, který však nikdy nebyl realizován.
Druhotným duvodem pro stavbu prehrady byla ochrana proti povodním.
Využití prehrada však brzy našla jako vyhlášené rekreacní stredisko, predevším díky okolní malebné krajine.
It was built between 1907 and 1912 and its initial use was intended to be a reservoir of water for the future navigation channel connecting the Danube, the Oder and the Elbe, which was never realized.
The secondary reason for the construction of the dam was protection against floods.
However, the dam soon found use as a renowned holiday resort, mainly due to the surrounding picturesque landscape.
