The sculpture, named Rockspinner 6, a nearly 11-foot-tall, 9,000-pound slab of granite, was mounted onto a bearing-filled base along the Promenade at Memorial Park. It is the creation of sculptor Zachary Coffin.
The kinetic art sculpture works by perfectly balancing on a specially made platform. The platform allows the rock to spin slowly with even a slight nudge.
"I've seen kids as young as 3 be able to spin it," said California-based artist Coffin, adding that a steady wind also will move the massive piece.
The $60,000 sculpture was paid for by a Bush Foundation grant for Community Innovation administered by Destination Rapid City.
