"The Palace of the Popes is built on the highest point of the city, the rock of the Doms, between the cathedral and the communal palace. The chosen location is therefore important from a defensive point of view but also from a symbolic point of view.

Built on the site of the bishop's palace - which is made possible by the fact that John XXII was bishop of Avignon and that there is no new bishop at the moment when, become pope, there is install - this new palace replaces the previous papal residence.

Indeed, Clement V remained in the convent of the Dominicans, then outside the walls of the first wall of the city. It is essentially to Benedict XII and Clement VI that it is up to build the palace we see today.

Later popes will build some additions that will not change it very much. It is very impressive to think that most of the palace was built in twenty years.

It is the largest surviving Gothic palace, with a surface area of 6,500 square meters and a total area of 15,000 square meters including courtyards and gardens. "
