In fall of 2016 the students, teachers and the Parent Teacher Advisory Council (PTAC) of Ellen Hopkins Elementary School planned and built a Natural Play Park on school grounds. The area was started with raised garden beds for native grasses, flowers and vegetables. Included in one of the raises beds is an insect hotel.

Of the approximately 3500 species of bees found in the United States, almost 400 species make their homes in Minnesota. The majority of these bees, about 98%, are “Solitary bees” that live on their own,
not in colonies with a queen and workers like honey bees and bumble bees. These solitary females builds their own nests, collect their own pollen and nectar, and lays their own eggs without any help from other bees.
