Designed by Joseph Brown for his brother in 1786, the three-story Georgian mansion has elaborate woodwork and is filled with decorative art, Townsend and Goddard furniture, silver, and items from the China trade, which is how John Brown made part of his fortune. In addition to opening trade with China, Brown is famous for his role in the burning of the British customs ship Gaspee. He was also a slave trader: his abolitionist brother, Moses, brought charges against him for illegally engaging in the buying and selling of human lives. John Brown donated the land for what became Brown University.
The house is now a history museum and is run by the Rhode Island Historical Society. Its focus is on the life of the early men and women of Rhode Island who helped create the Capitol city.
