"Located in the heart of the city, this former communal prison originated in the sixteenth century and then depended on the Lord of Bourbourg.
From 1730, repairs are undertaken, which will be worth the inscription "ANNO 1733" at the top of the main facade and still legible today. But following the escape of 8 prisoners in 1735, a new campaign will take place during the year 1742.
While retaining some of the buildings of the sixteenth century, the prison will be largely rebuilt in 1753.
Its history as a place of detention will continue until the Second World War, when it hosted German resistance and soldiers guilty of indiscipline. In the aftermath of the war, it will be converted back into a dwelling place and rented by the municipality to individuals.
It was not until 1989 that the tourist office Gravelines - Les Rives de l'Aa settled in part of the buildings, more specifically in the former jailer's apartments, the other part later converted into a museum. "

Il faudra attendre 1989 pour que l’office du tourisme Gravelines – Les Rives de l’Aa s’installe dans une partie des bâtiments, plus spécifiquement dans les anciens appartements du geôlier, l’autre partie reconvertie plus tard en musée. "
