Located in Downtown Bellingham, the
Whatcom Transportation Authority's Bellingham Station is the focal point for a vast county-wide transit system.
While most of the routes starting at Bellingham Station serve the City of Bellingham, they also go directly to Gooseberry Point (serving Lummi Indian Reservation & Lummi Island), Blaine, Birch Bay, Mount Vernon, and Kendall.
Overall the WTA has 31 different routes as of August 2019. Of which, 22 serve this important transfer point.
This location has always been a transportation centre for Bellingham. From the City of Bellingham's planning department:
Railroad Avenue remained a railroad street until 1980 when Burlington Northern, who had bought out the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railway in 1911, finally abandoned their operations selling much of their land on Railroad Avenue to the City. At one time there were three B.B.& B.C tracks on Railroad Avenue and a Northern Pacific track running the alley to the east serving its freight and passenger terminal located where the WTA bus station is now.
