Die Helios Aktiengesellschafft war von 1882 bis 1930 ein Elektrotechnikunternehmen mit Sitz in Köln-Ehrenfeld. Die Firma entwickelte und baute unter anderem Lampen, Generatoren, Transformatoren sowie ganze Elektrizitätswerke, Straßenbahntechnik und Telegraphenanlagen. Helios trug so maßgeblich zur Elektrifizierung von Industrie, Verkehrstechnik und öffentlichem Raum in ganz Europa bei.

Ein spezieller Betriebszweig der Helios beschäftigte sich mit dem Bau und der technischen Ausrüstung von Leuchttürmen. Bis heute arbeiten mehrere Leuchttürme an der Nordsee mit Helios-Technik. Zu Versuchs- und Demonstrationszwecken baute Helios im Jahr 1895 am Rand seines Werksgeländes einen 44 Meter hohen, funktionstüchtigen Leuchtturm. Der Turm ist aus rotem Backstein gebaut und steht auf einem 12 Meter hohen, quadratischen Sockelgebäude. Er wurde zum Wahrzeichen der Firma und der damaligen Industriestadt Ehrenfeld.

Nach der Schließung der Helios Werke durchlebte das Firmengelände eine wechselhafte Geschichte, der Leuchtturm sowie die daran angrenzende Werkshalle wurden aber bis heute erhalten. 1996 wurde der Leuchtturm renoviert und mit einer neuen Lichttechnik (ohne Optik) ausgestattet. Seitdem leuchtet er wieder jeden Abend dauerhaft mit einem schwachen, blendfreien Licht und ist bis heute ein bedeutendes Wahrzeichen von Ehrenfeld. An der nahegelegenen S-Bahn-Station Ehrenfeld findet sich beispielsweise ein kunstvolles Wandmosaik, das den Leuchtturm zeigt. Seit 1986 steht der Turm unter Denkmalschutz.
Helios Aktiengesellschafft was from 1882 to 1930 an electrical engineering company based in Cologne-Ehrenfeld. Among other things, the company developed and built lamps, generators, transformers and entire power stations, tram technology and telegraph systems. Helios contributed significantly to the electrification of industry, transportation and public space throughout Europe.

A special branch of Helios dealt with the construction and technical equipment of lighthouses. To date, several lighthouses on the North Sea work with Helios technology. For experimental and demonstration purposes, Helios built a 44-meter-high, functioning lighthouse on the edge of its factory premises. The tower is built of red brick and stands on a 12 meter high, square base building. It became the symbol of the company and the industrial city of Ehrenfeld.

After the closure of Helios, the factory premises went through a changeable history, but the lighthouse and the adjoining factory hall have been preserved to this day. In 1996, the lighthouse was renovated and equipped with a new lighting technology (without optics). Since then, it has been shining steadily every evening with a faint, glare-free light and is still an important symbol of Ehrenfeld. For example, at the nearby S-Bahn station of Ehrenfeld there is an elaborate wall mosaic showing the lighthouse. Since 1986 the tower is a listed building.
