Formerly known as New Doha International Airport (NDIA), Hamad International Airport was originally scheduled to open in 2009, but after a series of costly delays, the airport finally opened on 30 April 2014 with a ceremonial Qatar Airways flight landing from nearby Doha International. National carrier Qatar Airways and all other carriers formally relocated to the new airport on 27 May 2014. In 2016, the airport was named the 50th busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic. There is currently one terminal with five concourses (A-E) and there are plans to expand the airport with another terminal.

The airport (terminal and runway) has been built 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east of the older Doha International Airport. It is spread over an area of 2,200 hectares (5,500 acres), half of which is on reclaimed land. In 2017, it was used by 35,270,410 passengers, there were 265,793 aircraft movements and the airport handled 2,227,705 tonnes of cargo. There are two runways, 16R/34L (4,250 m / 13,944 ft) and 16L/34R (4,850 m / 15,912 ft), the latter being the longest runway in Western Asia, and also one of the longest runways in the world. The elevation AMSL is 4 m / 13 ft.

The airport is currently regularly served by Qatar Airways (hub), Air India Express, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, British Airways, Cham Wings Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Himalaya Airlines, IndiGo, Iran Air, Jazeera Airways, Kuwait Airways, Middle East Airlines, Nepal Airlines, Oman Air, Pakistan International Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Regent Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, SalamAir, SriLankan Airlines, Syrian Air, Turkish Airlines and US-Bangla Airlines.
