Elizabeth Castle was built in the 16th Century to defend the port of St. Helier and the Southern coast of Jersey from attack from the sea.
The land that the castle is built on is cut off from the mainland twice a day by tides. At other times the land is connected by a causeway.
The ferry is an amphibious vehicle with wheels that can also float and has a propeller.
Loading takes place on a slipway and when it sets off acts as a wheeled vehicle. If the tide is fully out it drives on dry land to the castle's slipway, whilst if the tide is in it drives until it enters the water at which point it floats and uses the propeller as propulsion.
When the tide is in the ferry is the only way to get to the castle otherwise it is possible to walk on a concrete path.
