The dome prison was built between 1882 and 1886 by the justice architect Johan Frederik Metzelaar, who previously designed the comparable dome prison in Arnhem. The building was designed according to the panoptic principle devised by the British Jeremy Bentham in 1791: from the center of the circular complex, the guards were able to keep a constant eye on the prisoners.
The complex was designated as a national monument in 2001.
The dome prison of Breda was part of a judicial complex in the center of Breda. The former prison is one of three dome prisons existing in the Netherlands. It housed part of the De Boschpoort penal institution. This had three parts: a custody house, a prison and an extra care department.
Until January 2013 there was also a women's prison. The women were transferred to the Ter Peel detention center in Horst aan de Maas. On March 22, 2013, it was announced that the entire prison would be closed due to spending cuts. The first part closed in 2014. The rest of the complex was definitively closed as of 1 January 2016 as a penitentiary institution.
Currently the building can be rented for all kinds of events, guided tours are given, there is an escape room and there are plans to accommodate (starting) entrepreneurs. Housing and care are also looked into.
