The tower was built in 1894 by George Boldt, general manager of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City and manager of the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. The Boldts collected exotic fowl in the hennery portion of the stone tower, and the wooden top was the Dovecote. In early 1904 Boldt's wife died and he never returned to the island. For 73 years, the castle and other stone structures were left abandoned. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired Heart Island in 1977 and have spent more than $15 million for restoration and improvements.
(If known) Approximately how many pigeonholes in the dovecote?: unknown
