Cette plaque commémore l'inauguration
de la Via Alpina par SAS le Prince
Héréditaire Albert le 21 juin 2002.
Via Alpina est un sentier de randonnée
pédestre qui relie Monaco à Trieste au
travers des Alpes, parcourant diverses
régions de France, de Suisse, d'Italie,
du Liechtenstein, d'Allemagne, d'Autriche et
de Slovénie.
Ici, entre mer et montagne, au début ou
au terme de son périple, le randonneur
aura présent à l'esprit le fragile équilibre
entre les écosystemes alpins et les activités
des hommes, et la nécessité du maintien
de cet équilibre au bénéfice des générations
futures.

Via Alpina:
La Via Alpina est un réseau de randonnée pédestre alpin qui relie Trieste à Monaco, et qui propose cinq itinéraires sur l'ensemble des huit pays alpins : la Slovénie, l'Italie, l'Autriche, l'Allemagne, le Liechtenstein, la Suisse, la France et Monaco.
Pour la Via Alpina, aucun nouveau chemin ni aucune nouvelle infrastructure n'a été mise en place. On a eu recours au réseau des chemins touristiques et refuges déjà existants. Le logo Via Alpina a été rajouté à l'ancienne signalisation. 340 lieux d'étape sont équipés de panneaux d'information multilingues.
Les cinq parcours totalisent en tout plus de 5 000 km de trajet et 342 étapes journalières

Via Alpina is a hiking trail that links
Monaco to Trieste across the Alps, over
various regions of France, Switzerland, Italy,
Liechtenstein, Germany, Austria and Slovenia.
Here, between the sea and the mountains,
at the beginning or at the end of their journey,
the hikers will bear in mind the fragile balance
between alpine ecosystems and human
activities, and the need to keep this balance
for the benefit of future generations.

Via Alpina:
The Via Alpina is a network of five long-distance hiking trails across the alpine regions of Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Monaco. The longest of trails is the red trail, whose termini are in Trieste and Monaco.
The Via Alpina was created by a group of public and private organisations from the 8 Alpine countries in 2000, receiving EU funding from 2001 until 2008. It was initiated by the Association Grande Traversée des Alpes in Grenoble, which hosted the Via Alpina international secretariat until January 2014, when it was transferred to the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps CIPRA (Liechtenstein). There are national secretariats (hosted by public administrations or hiking associations) in each country. Its aim is to support sustainable development in remote mountain areas and promote the Alpine cultures and cultural exchanges.

Although Prince Albert does not own the Prince's Palace of Monaco, he does own shares in the Société des bains de mer de Monaco, which operates Monaco's casino and other entertainment properties in the principality.
