The Geschichtswerkstatt (History workshop), in the middle of Barmbek, at the corner of Hufnerstraße and Wiesendamm. A workshop in a former shop, with work rooms, archive, small exhibition corners, kitchen and visitor's room. The history workshop Barmbek, founded in 1985, has become a well-known address in the district and beyond.
Our main topics are: Urban development / restructuring, labour movement and industrial history, Barmbek life stories, Nazi history (stumbling blocks), culture and architecture in the district, audio-visual historiography, narrative history. The history workshop supports the residents of Barmbek in exploring their own history. It is a contact point and place of communication for lively district history. The cooperation with contemporary witnesses, their reports and stories about Barmbek's history, their collected documents and things are of central importance for us.
