On 29 October 1888, Emperor Wilhelm II visited Hamburg for the inauguration of the Speicherstadt and the new Freihafen (free port) - and himself took up the trowel and hammer. A major highlight of the emperor's visit was the laying of the keystone of the Brooks Bridge - one of the three new bridges that served as entrances to the mighty warehouse blocks of the Speicherstadt.

On the symbolic foundation stone is written (translated):
"Emperor Wilhelm II sets
this stone on 20 October 1888
at the connection of Hamburg
to the German customs territory."

Speicherstadt (City of Warehouses):
Hamburg's Speicherstadt is the world's largest historic warehouse complex, located in the port of Hamburg. It covers the area between Baumwall and Oberhafen. It has been listed as a historical monument since 1991 and has been entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 5 July 2015 with the neighbouring Kontorhausviertel and the Chilehaus under the name of Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel with the Chilehaus.

The Speicherstadt was built between 1883 and 1927 south of the old town on the former Elbe islands and residential quarters of Kehrwieder and Wandrahm as part of the Hamburg Freeport in three sections, the first section was completed in 1888. The construction was supervised by Franz Andreas Meyer, chief engineer of the Hamburg building delegation. He was assisted by the hydraulic engineering director Christian Nehls and the construction director Carl Johann Christian Zimmermann as well as a consortium of 15 engineers, 24 architects and draughtsmen. Of these, Georg Thielen designed around 30 warehouses at Neuer Wandrahm, Am Sandtorkai, Auf dem Sande, Brook and Kehrwieder.

The Emperor Wilhelm II.:
Wilhelm II, with his full name Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor Albert of Prussia, (* 27 January 1859 in Berlin; † 4 June 1941 in Doorn, Netherlands) from the House of Hohenzollern, was the last German Emperor and King of Prussia from 1888 to 1918. Wilhelm was a grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm I and a son of Kaiser Friedrich III. He reigned for only 99 days, so that in 1888, the "Year of Three Emperors", a 90-year-old and a 56-year-old ruler, was followed by the 29-year-old Wilhelm II. Through his mother Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland, William was the grandson of Queen Victoria.
