"Les Phénix de Caen is a French baseball club located in Caen. The team currently plays in the Regional 1 championship of the Normandy Baseball League Softball. The club operates on the "Melvin & Jean McNair"."

"Le club de baseball de Caen est en reconstruction depuis quatre ans. Les Phénix, qui évoluent en première division régionale, veulent concilier sport et valeurs sociales.
Melvin et Jean McNair, militants de la cause afro-américaines ayant marqué le quartier de la Grâce de Dieu par leur engagement en faveur de l‘égalité, de l’accès à l’éducation et du vivre ensemble, donnent aujourd’hui leur nom à un stade de baseball. Celui des Phénix de Caen.
Melvin, fortement lié au club caennais par son implication, en est aujourd’hui membre d’honneur. Ces notions de « partage et d’être ensemble » sont très présentes dans le discours de Boris Helleu, actuel président du club.
Des performances en constante progression
Actuellement deuxième de première division régionale, le club se reconstruit. Cela fait maintenant quatre ans qu’il poursuit sa restructuration, avec un nombre croissant de licenciés. Les Phénix comptent aujourd’hui 43 licenciés et deux équipes inscrites en championnat, dont une équipe de softball mixte permettant une approche différente du sport.
La mixité est tout de même présente dans chacune des équipes inscrites. C’est un, si ce n’est le principal objectif du club, que de promouvoir l’accès au sport à toutes et tous, sans distinction. Alliant néanmoins des performances sportives en constante progression, le club cumule à l’heure actuelle plus de victoires (7 pour 3 défaites) que l’année précédente.
Notre objectif, c’est le maintien de l’équipe en Régional 1, en essayant de progresser tous les ans.
Le baseball est un sport de complémentarité, un sport où l’équipe fonctionne tel un corps dont chaque joueur en est un élément indispensable. En sept manches, deux équipes de neuf joueurs se font face en attaque et en défense, à la batte pour l’une et à la réception pour l’autre. L’objectif étant de réaliser un tour de terrain complet après avoir frappé la balle, en passant par chacune des bases, pour marquer un point.
Rapidité, puissance et dextérité
Non limité par le temps, le baseball n’est pas pour autant un sport statique, explique Boris Helleu. Au contraire, les phases de jeu peuvent s’avérer très intenses. La grande diversité des positions fait que chacun a sa place sur le terrain, quelque soit son âge ou ses capacités physiques. La rapidité de certains, leur permettant d’aller sur base rapidement, compense avec la puissance ou la dextérité d’autres.
Le projet associatif du club, c’est de combiner au mieux les performances sportives et l’accès à la pratique.
C’est sur cette accessibilité que jouent les Phénix dans leur projet associatif, qui est avant tout un projet socio-éducatif. Ce projet ne sera pas « sacrifié sur l’autel de la performance », met en avant le président du club. Permettre à toutes et tous de venir pratiquer un sport atypique, quasi méconnu dans l’hexagone, dans un esprit de partage, c’est ainsi que pourrait se résumer le projet des Phénix.
Pour encore mieux renaître de leurs cendres, ces derniers organisent prochainement des journées de découverte gratuites les mardis 5 et 12 juin ainsi que les jeudis 7 et 14 juin, à partir de 18h30 au terrain Melvin & Jean McNair du complexe de la Grâce de Dieu.

Constantly improving performance
Currently second in the first regional division, the club is being rebuilt. It has now been in the process of restructuring for four years, with an increasing number of licensees. Les Phénix now has 43 licence holders and two teams registered in the championship, including a mixed softball team allowing a different approach to the sport.
There is still gender diversity in each of the teams registered. It is one, if not the main objective of the club, to promote access to sport for all, without distinction. Nevertheless, combining constantly improving sporting performances, the club currently has more wins (7 for 3 losses) than the previous year.
Our objective is to keep the team in Regional 1, trying to improve every year.
Baseball is a complementary sport, a sport where the team functions like a body of which each player is an essential part. In seven sets, two teams of nine players face each other in attack and defence, batting for one and receiving for the other. The objective is to make a complete lap after hitting the ball, passing through each of the bases, to score a point.
Speed, power and dexterity
Baseball is not limited by time, but it is not a static sport," explains Boris Helleu. On the contrary, the game phases can be very intense. The great diversity of positions means that everyone has a place on the field, whatever their age or physical abilities. The speed of some, allowing them to go on base quickly, compensates with the power or dexterity of others.
The club's associative project is to combine sports performance and access to practice as best as possible.
It is on this accessibility that the Phoenixes play in their associative project, which is above all a socio-educational project. This project will not be "sacrificed on the altar of performance", says the club president. To allow everyone to come and practice an atypical sport, almost unknown in France, in a spirit of sharing, this is how the Phoenix project could be summarized.
To be reborn even better from their ashes, the latter will soon organize free discovery days on Tuesdays, June 5 and 12, and Thursdays, June 7 and 14, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Melvin & Jean McNair site of the Grace of God complex.
