No one can really claim to know Stuttgart without having made a trip to one of its mineral baths.

The springs Stuttgart - Bad Cannstatt and Berg make up the second largest mineral water system in Europe after Budapest. No fewer than 19 springs and fountains pour out 22 million liters a day of differently mineralized water which is at times full of carbon. "It appears as though nature wanted to pour out its entire supply of mineral water at once," the ducal personal physician Dr. Gesner aptly described the abundance of water caused by the outlet of mineral water and the unique natural treasure of Stuttgart in the year 1749. Around a third of the overall amount is used in spa and bathing operations. Eleven springs have the title "state recognized healing spring".

The MineralBad Cannstatt has four different healing and mineral springs, among them both carbonated water and briny water. They bubble in the pools of the large bathing landscape, in the Russian - Roman steam bath, in the sauna, in the tub baths and in the therapeutic movement bath of the health center.

First is the Hofrat-Seyffer-Quelle or Hofrat-Seyffer Spring which is classified as a Thermalsole meaning hot and briny. It is located near the Reinhold-Meier bridge over the Neckar, about 850 meters away from the bathhouse.

The next 3 are classified as Heilquellen meaning of medicinal value. They are the Wilhelmsbrunnen I und II and Gottlieb-Daimler-Quelle and they are located right near the bathhouse.

The last is the Canstatter Quelle which is only classified as a mineral spring. You can see it pouring out of the wall when swimming in the outside pool.

Architecturally enchanting, the Mineral BadCannstatt is an island of tranquility with the pleasant atmosphere of the traditional healing bath.

Whoever would like to relax and promote their health while swimming in mineral water under the spreading, light flooded Parabol ceiling of the bathing hall or outdoors will find a large relaxing area with two 30° Celsius warm swimming pools (the largest pools) with Stuttgart's unique thermal salt water, which also bubbles at a temperature of 36° Celsius in the whirlpools and in the seating and wading pools. A further swimming pool is filled with healing water which is naturally cool with 18° Celsius and which is especially full of carbon. Water attractions like the stream channel and the sputterer, massage jets and waterfall, maintained solariums, green roof terraces and a cafeteria let the visit to the mineral baths become a complete day of relaxation.

The MineralBad Cannstatt Specialty: Salty water which has been warmed up to 36° Celsius and natural mineral water between 16° and 18° Celsius feeds the diving, cold and warm pools of the combined steam bath / sauna landscape and the Kneipp station.

In the health center MineralBad Cannstatt, for the ambulant Stuttgarter therapy and the physiotherapy, there is a therapeutic movement bath available with gymnastics hall, diverse healing treatments like for example all forms of massage, individual tempered healing baths in the tub, but especially heat treatment with natural fango. The Stuttgarter treatment, the treatment at your front door, is the emphasis of the preventative and rehabilitation measures in the health center MineralBad Cannstatt. As an ideal combination for the personal fitness, the state licensed healing spring is recommended in connection with selected health and fitness courses.

The shy types may wonder, how does a visit to the spa work?

Well, come prepared with swimsuit, towel, and shower soap as these are not provided. When you enter the facility, you will see a counter where you pay the entrance fee which is €6.60 for 2.5 hours if you are an adult and only going to swim in the pools. The sauna and steam bath cost extra. You will receive a token or chip which you then insert into a turnstyle. Once you insert it, you will be able to pass the turnstyle and the token will be spit out. You need to keep the token.

Immediately after, there are some lock boxes which you can use to store valuables, but you really don't need them as there are free, secured lockers further in.

Proceed to the changing area where there are a number of cabins. You walk in on one side, change your clothes, and then walk out the other side to the pools. The cabin doors are locked while inside by a lever near the base of the bench.

Once outside of the changing cabin, you will find the lockers with the keys hanging from them. (If the key isn't there, then it means the locker is already taken) Insert the token into the slot on the locker key and this will allow you to remove the key, and lock the locker.

You then strap the key (and token) to your wrist.

Your entry time is recorded on the token. There is a station just as you enter the pool area which will allow you to check how much time you still have on the token.

Don't forget to take a shower before going into the pools.

When you're finished, you will need the token again to exit through the turnstyle.

The Sauna and Steam Bath are textile free and mixed men/women on most days. They are segregated off from the rest of the facility and cost extra for entry. The swimming pools are not textile free except on special days/times. Call them or have your hotel call them if you have a doubt.

The outdoor pool is at 30° C which will feel a bit chilly when the weather turns cold. The benefit of the relatively low temperature is that you can stay in it a long time. The 36° pools are quite nice and relaxing and not too hot.
