Before the Spaniards set out to conquer America in the 16th century, they began conquering the Canary Islands in the 15th century.
The conquest of the island of Gran Canaria by the use of at times more than 1000 soldiers on behalf of the Crown of Castile, began on 24 June 1478 with the landing of the troops at La Isleta (today a district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) and ended with the capitulation of the Canarios in Ansite on 29 April 1483.
In February 1482 the Guanarteme of Gáldar Tenesor Semidán was captured. He was sent to Castile and introduced to Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. After being baptized by Cardinal Pedro González de Mendoza in the name of his godfather the king, he was given the first name Ferdinand (Fernando) and his former title Guanarteme as his house name. After his return to Gran Canaria, he supported the Castilian conquerors by ordering the Canarios, who had retreated to the Fortaleza de Ansite, to give up. This capitulation on 28 or 29 April 1483 is considered to be the end of the conquest of the island of Gran Canaria.
