The French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer or IFREMER) is a public institution of an industrial and commercial nature under the supervision of the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy and the Ministry of the Environment. Higher Education and Research.
In 1954, on the quays of the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, it was decided to create an organization devoted to scientific and technical research applied to fishing. Thirty years later, the Scientific and Technical Institute of Maritime Fisheries merges with the National Center for Exploration of Oceans and becomes the French Research Institute for the Exploitation of the Sea.
The implementation in 1991 of a hydrodynamic test pool in the buildings of the National Sea Center (Nausicaa) built close to the Ifremer Center, has strengthened the potential for technological research and development.
Finally, in 2009, a cluster of sclerochronology and a unit dedicated to the taxonomy and ecology of zooplankton consolidate its skills. This project was supported and subsidized by the European Community and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region.
The missions of this public Institution of industrial and commercial character (EPIC) are the following ones:
- Know, evaluate and develop ocean resources and enable their sustainable exploitation.
- Improve methods of monitoring, forecasting, evolution, protection and enhancement of the marine and coastal environment.
- Promote the economic development of the maritime world.

L'Institut français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer (Ifremer ou IFREMER) est un établissement public à caractère industriel et commercial sous la tutelle du ministère de l'Écologie, du Développement durable et de l'Énergie et du ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche.
C'est en 1954, que sur les quais du port de Boulogne-sur-Mer, il a été décidé la création d'un organisme voué à la recherche scientifique et technique appliquée à la pêche. Trente ans plus tard, l'Institut Scientifique et Technique des Pêches Maritimes fusionne avec le Centre National pour l'Exploration des Océans et devient l'Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer.
La mise en oeuvre en 1991, d'un bassin d'essais à vocation hydrodynamique dans les bâtiments du Centre National de la Mer (Nausicaa) édifié à deux pas du Centre Ifremer, est venu renforcer le potentiel de recherche et développement technologiques.
Enfin, en 2009, un pôle de sclérochronologie et une unité dédiée à la taxonomie et l'écologie du zooplancton viennent consolider ses compétences. Ce projet a été soutenu et subventionné par la Communauté Européenne et la région Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Les missions de cet Établissement public à caractère industriel et commercial (EPIC) sont les suivantes :
- Connaître, évaluer et mettre en valeur les ressources des océans et permettre leur exploitation durable.
- Améliorer les méthodes de surveillance, de prévision, d'évolution, de protection et de mise en valeur du milieu marin et côtier.
- Favoriser le développement économique du monde maritime.
