Astoria Column - Look-Out Towers on Waymarking.com

The Astoria Column was placed on Coxcomb hill, the highest hill in Astoria. The column has a spectacular view of the mouth of the Columbia River, where it spills into the Pacific Ocean. There are 165 steps to the top.

The column was built in 1926. It was financed by the Great Northern Railroad, and also by the great-grandson of John Jacob Astor. It was patterned after the Trajan's Column in Rome. The Astoria column is highlighted by beautiful murals wrapped diagonally all up the Column, that depict the history of the area, including: the discoverer Robert Gray, the Great Northern Railway, Lewis and Clark and the claims to and developement of the Northwest Territory.
