L’histoire de l’église Saint-Loup doit être racontée en évoquant le lien la liant à l’actuel Athénée royal François Bovesse. Autrefois appelé École du Faucon, celui-ci est repris en 1611 par les frères jésuites qui en font un collège d’humanités. Ils agrandissent les bâtiments et y construisent un réfectoire, un lavoir, et même une brasserie. Sur base des plans de l’architecte jésuite Père Huyssens, les premières pierres de la chapelle jouxtant le collège sont posées en 1621. L’église est baptisée Saint-Ignace en l’honneur du fondateur de la Compagnie de Jésus. L’argent vient à manquer et la construction de l’église s’éternise. Elle est seulement achevée en 1641. Quatre ans plus tard, Englebert Dubois, l’évêque de Namur, l’inaugure.

Après la suppression de la Compagnie de Jésus par le Pape Clément XIV en 1773, les Jésuites doivent quitter les lieux. À quelques rues de là, l’église Saint-Loup est en ruine. La ville confie alors à son curé et ses paroissiens l’ancienne chapelle jésuite. L’église devient donc paroissiale en 1777 sous le patronyme de Saint-Loup. La statue de Saint-Ignace qui trône dans le maître-autel est légèrement transformée, se parant d’une mitre et d’une crosse. En janvier 1936, l’église Saint-Loup et le collège, devenu Athénée, deviennent patrimoines immobiliers classés de la Région wallonne. C’est récemment, en 2013, que l’église Saint-Loup est classée patrimoine immobilier exceptionnel.

The history of the Saint-Loup church must be told by evoking the link between it and the current Athénée royal François Bovesse. Formerly called the École du Faucon, it was taken over in 1611 by the Jesuit brothers who turned it into a college of humanities. They enlarged the buildings and built a refectory, a laundry room and even a brewery. On the basis of the plans of the Jesuit architect Father Huyssens, the first stones of the chapel adjoining the college were laid in 1621. The church is baptized Saint-Ignace in honour of the founder of the Society of Jesus. The money is running out and the construction of the church is dragging on. It was only completed in 1641. Four years later, Englebert Dubois, the Bishop of Namur, inaugurated it.

After the suppression of the Society of Jesus by Pope Clement XIV in 1773, the Jesuits had to leave the area. A few blocks away, the Saint-Loup church is in ruins. The city then entrusted the former Jesuit chapel to its parish priest and parishioners. The church thus became a parish church in 1777 under the patronymic of Saint-Loup. The statue of Saint Ignatius that sits on the main altar is slightly transformed, adorned with a bolster and a crosier. In January 1936, the Saint-Loup church and the college, which became Athénée, became classified real estate assets of the Walloon Region. It is only recently, in 2013, that the Saint-Loup church was classified as an exceptional real estate property.

A chronogram giving the date of the renovation of the church is engraved in the angelic stone that surmounts the church gate:
