THE PLACE

The terminal has a North and a South concourse with a total of 22 gates, 14 and 8 respectively, servicing a dozen airlines. Gates 7 and 8 in the South concourse are designated for international arrivals. Two sets of ticket counters are evenly split at the North and South sides of the entrance hall at Level 2. The Security screening area and a small food court are centered in the main part of the terminal, also on Level 2. Several restaurants and shops are found along the concourses. There are four baggage claim carousels on Level 1. A notable architectural feature is the set of six soaring glass portico structures at the Departures road area.

THE PERSON

In 1997, the Rhode Island General Assembly enacted legislation to name this part of the T.F. Green Airport the Bruce Sundlun Terminal Building. The naming honor is described on a brass plaque mounted to a brick covered column next to the top of the escalators in the Departures lobby. A low relief bust of the Governor is included at the top left corner of the marker beside his name. The sign reads:

Bruce Sundlun learned to fly in President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Civilian Pilot Training Program on this airport, and served during World War II as a B-17 Bomber Pilot from 1941 - 1945. Shot down over Belgium, he avoided capture for six months with the underground in France before making his way to Switzerland where he served in the American Embassy, and then again as a pilot in the Pacific theater of operations. After commanding several active reserve squadrons, he retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1980 as a Colonel.

After an extensive legal and business career, he was elected Governor in 1990. He created the Rhode Island Airport Corporation and directed the design and the building of this Airport Terminal. In 1997, the General Assembly enacted legislation to name this facility the Bruce Sundlun Terminal Building to acknowledge his role and vision in swimming against the tide of political opposition to ensure construction of this facility.
