The City of Namur is a French-speaking city in Belgium, capital of Wallonia since 1986, and capital of the province of Namur. The city is centrally located 63 km south-east of Brussels, 40 km east of Charleroi and 66 km west of Liège.
Occupied since the Neolithic period, the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers gave birth to the Roman city at the beginning of our era. A former fiefdom of the Counts of Namur, successively attached to the houses of Flanders and Hainaut, Courtenay, Luxembourg and Dampierre, owned by the Dukes of Burgundy and then the Habsburg Empire, the citadel of Namur has been the focus of many sieges over the centuries. Despite the damage caused by the conflicts, the city still has a rich movable and immovable heritage.
Today the regional capital, the city is the seat of the Parliament of Wallonia, the Walloon Government and the Walloon Public Service, but also the host city of the Festival international du film francophone, the festival d'arts forains Namur in May, the KIKK Festival and the Verdur Rock. It also hosts several higher education institutions, including a university.
