In 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars thousands of wounded Prussian soldiers were taken care of in Potsdam's hospitals. 2,000 of them succumbed to their wounds and were buried in a mass grave in the town's Old Cemetery. An ensemble of three statues depicting the living mourning the dead (below) was put on top of their resting place.

In 1815, a monument in honor of the freedom fighters was dedicated at the graveside (right).

tthe monument consists of a 24 ft tall bronze cross mounted on an 18 ft tall pedestal. At the foot of the cross are three eagles, carrying a wreath of oak and laurel leaves. The dedication on the pedestal reads:

BRAVE AND VICTORIOUS
DEFENDERS OF THE FATHERLAND
IN THE GREAT YEAR OF NATIONAL RESURRECTION
MDCCCXIII
WOUNDED
IN THE DAYS OF
GROSS-BEEREN, DENNEWITZ AND LEIPZIG
CARED FOR HERE WITH LOVE
MOURNED IN DEATH
AND BURIED IN GOD'S ACRE
