The lagoon Charca de Maspalomas is ideal to observe water birds in their element. This reed-covered lagoon of brackish water is located in the southwest of the Special Nature Reserve Dunas de Maspalomas, about 200 metres from the emblematic lighthouse, in the middle of the tourist stronghold in the south of the island of Gran Canaria. A hiking trail leads past the western edge of the lagoon and offers best photo motives of the lagoon and the life forms settled in it.
With a little luck you can observe up to 24 species of migratory birds and resident species in just one day. Almost all year round, herons and egrets search for small fish and insects, while sand herons browse the bottom of the quiet wetlands. Swarms of Mediterranean seagulls, coots and railing birds fly to the lagoon to rest and eat. With a little luck even ospreys or rare desert falcons can be observed circling over the brackish water.
