In Potsdam, Cafe Heider is known as "The city's living room" - without a doubt one of the most popular hangouts in town.

The establishment stretches across three houses, hosting a breakfast cafe, a restaurant and a salon for special events. The houses were built in 1731 by Dutch carpenter Gerrad de Ridder; the restaurant opened in 1878. Originally a confectionery (which is a big word for pastry shop), serving cake and coffee for the aristocracy of Prussia's capital, it kept growing and soon added more than just cake to the menu.

In spite of the expanding menu, now offering the full board of breakfast, lunch and dinner, the place kept the cozy sounding name Cafe. To live up to its "Cafe" status, the restaurant is proud to still serve the same pastries and fancy cakes it served 140 years ago. (see picture left).

Today, the menu covers 20 pages, not counting daily specials. You can check out the menu online, unfortunately only in German language. But the menu website also has some good pictures (right) to give you an idea of what the place has to offer.
