Cecilienhof Palace is one of many castles in the former Prussian capital Potsdam.

from July 17, to August 2, 1945, it was the location of the Potsdam Conference, at which the leaders of the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States decided the post war order for Europe and Asia.

It was also the place where the Allies issued the Potsdam Declaration, defining the terms for Japan's surrender.

Today, the conference room in which the negotiations took place is one of the most popular tourist spots in Europe.

One lasting (and now famous) legacy of the Soviet occupation of East Germany is a large red star made of red flowers in front of the building.

Unfortunately, when we visited the castle, there was a lot of reconstruction going on (above right) and we were not able to take a picture of the most prominent location, the courtyard with the red star. We borrowed a picture from Wikipedia (above left).
