Since the end of World War II in 1945, German military has not been involved in any combat (and we think, that's a good thing). However, since the foundation of the Bundeswehr (German for Federal Defense) in 1955, German soldiers were part of several UN-Peacekeeping Missions in 11 countries from Kosovo to Somalia, the Army's Medical Corps provided aid after natural disasters in 17 countries and the German Navy cleared mines in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Over 100 Soldiers lost their lives during these missions. Furthermore, over 3,000 men and women died in accidents during their military service in Germany. |

The Monument honors all Bundeswehr soldiers who died while performing their duties, in Germany or abroad.
The monument is 105 feet wide, 26 feet deep and 33 feet high. The walls are covered with bronze sheets. The holes in the sheets are in the shape of military dog tags to symbolize fallen soldiers.
|
The "Book of Memory" contains 20 bronze tablets, listing the names of all fallen soldiers sorted by date.
|
An insription at the wall reads:
DEN TOTEN UNSERER BUNDESWEHR FÜR FRIEDEN, RECHT UND FREIHEIT
To the dead of our Defense Forces for peace, justice and freedom.
The monument is located just outside the German Department of Defense. It was dedicated on September 8, 2009 by the German president.
