A number of locks have been built for the purpose of freight shipping with the so-called Berkelzomp on the river Berkel. The Berkelzomp had a capacity of about 8 tons and could sail with a sail, been pulled over the towpath by horse or man and partly on the current.
This mode of freight transport lasted until 1895. The competition from transport by road and by train became too big.
