The mystery occurred at the home of John McDonald, son of an original settler. The haunting started with an unexplained falling beam in the barn and continued with strange noises, freak fires, flying stones, bullets and dying livestock.
Desperate, John sought the help of a girl who was said to have the ability to read moonstones. She told him that if he used a silver bullet to shoot the stray goose that had been wandering his farm, his troubles would end.
He fashioned a silver bullet, hit the goose in the wing and, soon after, an old woman living nearby was seen with her arm in a sling. Reputably this neighbour had been the source of the problems, since John had refused to sell part of his land to her, and after shooting the goose his problems were over.
The Wallaceburg museum near here has exhibits and books describing the events. Just south of the plaques (but on private land) you can find the McDonald family graves. There's also a geocache that starts from these coordinates.
