This coin represents British Columbia, Canada. The front shows two Orcas, one lifelike, the other representative of the BC First Nations, an important part of the BC culture and history. The orcas, breaching from the stylized Pacific Ocean, were designed by First Nations artist, and renowned graphic arts professional, Tom Spetter. The reverse shows a typical BC scene... a bald eagle flying over coniferous trees and river with a backdrop of rugged mountains. The dogwood flowers in the border are the official BC flower.
A personal note from the artist:
"The whale image is a simplified First Nations design. In native stories the whale was a sea-going manifestation of the wolf (a great hunter). It was said that whales had the power to overtake canoes and turn the inhabitants of the canoe into whales. This I believe is one of the reasons of the great spiritual bond between whales & humans"... Tom.
