The Little Mermaid (den lille havfrue) is a statue depicting a mermaid, in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. The statue sits on a rock in the harbour off Langelinie promenade (near the Kastellet). Langelinie is the longest embankment in the city.
Based on the fairytale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, the small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and has been a major tourist attraction since 1913. It has become a popular target for defacement by vandals and political activists. It has a height of 1.25 metres (4.1 ft) and weighs 175 kilograms (385 lb).
The statue was commissioned in 1909 byCarl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsbeg, who had been fascinated by a ballet about the fairytale in Copenhagen's Royal Theatre and asked the prima ballerina, Ellen Price, to model for the statue. The sculptor Edvard Eriksen created the bronze statue, which was unveiled on 23 August 1913. The statue's head was modelled after Price, but as the ballerina did not agree to model in the nude, the sculptor's wife, Eline Erikson, was used for the body.
This coin was designed by chiacache. He is a Washington cacher living on the North Kitsap Pensinsula which lies west of Seattle across Puget Sound. He started caching July 4th, 2005.
Gjensen a Danish cacher from Copenhagen -caching since March 11th, 2004- wrote about this coin:
"It celebrates the country of Denmark. It arrived quite unexpectedly in the midst of our efforts to design our own coin. The coin itself is not bad, featuring a good map (not forgetting the island of Bornholm to the extreme east) and the Dannebrog flag. The "skjule og søge" text is a bit aqward - anyway it is supposed to mean "hide and seek". The other side has a good 3D rendering of the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen. For this reason we usually refer to this coin as "the Mermaid coin". It also has the word "Denmark" (in English only) and the word "skål" (cheers). This last bit is by far the worst feature of the coin, and something that I dislike intensely."
