Race to the White House - D11

This travel bug was placed by us, young people in Global Kids, Inc. and the Brooklyn Public Library in the summer of 2012. We placed a total of 48 bugs all over Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn associated with topics we feel are important to society and should be discussed in the 2012 Presidential Election campaigns. The issue for this travel bug is: Medical Marijuana

Medical Marijuana is the use of marijuana for medical purposes , the production sale and distribution for medicinal purposes.

Pros:
Proponents of medical marijuana argue that it can be a safe and effective treatment for the symptoms of cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, pain, glaucoma, epilepsy, and other conditions.

Cons:
Marijuana can be addictive and lead to harder drug use and impairs driving ability, and affect fertility. Drug use affects every sector of society, straining our economy, our health care, and criminal justice system.

We chose this topic because we know that drugs like marijuana are a popular topic. We understand that marijuana can help people with certain illnesses deal with their symptoms. However, it does not cure it. If we made it legal and taxed it, more money will come back into the economy. It will also help our economy by decreasing the amount of people incarcerated for selling marijuana. As a result less money will be spent to keep people in prison, allowing more money to be put back into the economy. We also realize that the majority of people using the drug are youth that don't suffer from extreme illnesses that may justify their need to use it. There should be some restrictions for the use of marijuana for young people. But besides that, we believe that the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes should be legal.

Do you think that this issue should be discussed in the debates, campaign stops, and in ads of the 2012 Presidential Election campaign? If so, then move it closer to Washington, D.C. If not, then move it away from Washington, D.C. On Tuesday, November 6th, 2012, the final votes will be tallied.
