Race To The White House - C10

This travel bug was placed by us, young people in Global Kids, Inc. and the Brooklyn Public Library in the summer of 2012. We placed a total of 48 bugs all over Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn associated with topics we feel are important to society and should be discussed in the 2012 Presidential Election campaigns. This travel bug is racing against the other travel bugs. If you want to get your and our point across, will you help it run the race?

The issue for this travel bug is: Gun Control

Gun control is any law designed to restrict or limit the possession, production, importation, shipment, sale, and or use of guns or other firearms by private citizens.

In the U.S. now, people have access to guns very easily. This often means that people carry guns illegally and that it is easier for people to kill or harm others. With an increase of people buying guns, there is higher gang violence and increased crime rate. In Colorado, James Holmes showed up about ten minutes before the showing of the movie, The Dark Knight Rises, and opened fire on the audience, killing twelve people and injuring fifty more. Mayor Nutter of Philadelphia, a strong proponent of Gun Control, wanted to strengthen gun laws even more  because of the Colorado movie theater shooting. Mayor Nutter is working with other mayors in an attempt to stop gun violence. .

The second amendment states: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” There are many reasons people want to own guns. A good example is because women need to defend themselves from home invaders or rapists on the streets. Our country was basically brought up on firearms. Some people believe that the right to bear arm is needed to protect themself and our nation from foreign and domestic threats.

We care about gun control because guns have a lot of negative effects in our society leading to a lot of deaths, injuries, and chaos in many communities.

Do you think that this issue should be discussed in the debates, campaign stops, and in ads of the 2012 Presidential Election campaign? If so, then move it closer to Washington, D.C. If not, then move it away from Washington, D.C. On Tuesday, November 6th, 2012, the final votes will be tallied.

We hope to see photos of the bug on its travels and we would love to know why you chose to move it closer to or farther from the White House.
