Current Goal

To spread awareness of the childhood cancer Retinoblastoma.  Avery was diagnosed with this dreadful disease before his first birthday, and by that birthday he had already lost one eye in order to save his life. It’s now 2018 and Avery is a happy and healthy 9 year old!

About This Item

003

Retinoblastoma is the most common primary ocular malignancy (eye cancer) of childhood, occurring in approximately 1 in 15,000 to 1 in 16,600 live births in the United States and Northern Europe. Between 1990 and 1995, the annual incidence of retinoblastoma in the United States among children younger than 15 years of age was 4.0 per million, resulting in approximately 300 new cases per year.

The majority of cases are diagnosed in children younger than two years of age, and approximately 95 percent before the age of five. However, cases of newly diagnosed retinoblastoma have been reported in children as old as 18 years and, rarely, even in adults. The incidence is similar in boys and girls and among blacks and whites.

Approximately one-fourth of retinoblastoma cases are bilateral; bilateral disease is always heritable, whereas unilateral, unifocal disease usually is not. Multifocal, unilateral disease is generally heritable and should prompt investigation for a germline mutation. Bilateral tumors occur more commonly among younger children, reflecting the presence of a germline mutation (the average age at diagnosis is one versus two years among cases of bilateral and unilateral retinoblastoma, respectively).

Hmm, no longer a Dragon but a less photogenic cardholder coming out of winter hibernation into 2020, still it's spreading awareness of Retinoblastoma and that's the main thing.
