Tegetthoff

Der TB Tegetthoff soll den Spuren seines Namensgebers folgen und folgende Stationen besuchen:

1. Venedig – österr. Marinekollegium
2. Helgoland – Gedenkstein am Friedhof Düne
3. Lissa – Löwendenkmal
4. Pula – k.u.k. Marinecasino
5. Wien – Tegetthoff-Denkmal am Praterstern
6. Graz – Grab von W.v. Tegetthoff am Friedhof St.Leonhard

Es wäre eine sehr schöne Ergänzung des TB-Logs, wenn an den genannten Stationen ein Foto des TB an Orten, die an Tegetthoff erinnern,  angefertigt wird. Am 20. Juli 2016 jährt sich das Datum der Seeschlacht von Lissa zum 150. Mal und ich hoffe, dass der TB alle seine Stationen erreicht hat und bis dahin wieder zu mir zurückgekehrt ist.

It would be a great amendment of the travel bug-log to get pictures of the TB on the mentioned stations, remembering to Tegetthoff.

At July 20, 2016 there ist he 150 Year Anniversary of the naval battle of Lissa and it would be great when the TB Tegetthoff will have successfully completed his mission and comes back to me.

Vizeadmiral Wilhelm von TEGETTHOFF

Wilhelm von Tegetthoff diente von 1840 bis 1871 in der k.u.k. Kriegsmarine Österreich-Ungarns. Seine Karriere begann 1840 im österreichischen Marinekollegium in Venedig. Nach Abschluss der Ausbildung wurde er auf verschiedenen Schiffen verwendet.

1864 erhielt er das Kommando über das österr. Geschwader, das Preußen im deutsch-dänischen Krieg unterstützte und errang am 9.Mai 1864 bei Helgoland einen Sieg gegen die Dänen; Tegetthoff wurde zum Contreadmiral befördert.

Am 20. Juli 1866 besiegte die k.u.k. Marine die italienische Flotte in der Seeschlacht bei Lissa und wurde dafür Viceadmiral.

1868 wurde Wilhelm von Tegetthoff zum Commandanten Sr. Majestät Kriegsmarine ernannt und trieb bei seinen Reformen den Ausbau von Pola voran.

Am 7. April 1871 starb Vizeadmiral Tegetthoff und ist in Graz begraben.

In Wien wurde im 1.Bezirk die Tegetthoffstrasse nach ihm benannt und am Praterstern ein Denkmal errichtet. Das Tegetthoff-Denkmal von Pula wurde 1930 nach Graz überstellt und wird derzeit renoviert.

Viceadmiral Wilhelm von TEGETTHOFF

Wilhelm von Tegetthoff served the Austro-Hungarian Navy in the years from 1840 to 1871. He started his career in the College of the Austro-Hungarian Navy in Venice, afterwards he was on duty on several ships.

In 1864 the Austro-Hungarian Navy was confederated with Prussia against the Kingdom of Denmark. In the naval battle near Helgoland at May 9, 1864 the Austrian Squadron beat the Danish Navy and Tegetthoff advanced in the rank of Contreadmiral.

The commander of the Austrian squadron in the Adriatic sea W.v.Tegetthoff beat the Italian navy at July 20, 1866 in the naval battle of Lissa. The Austrian Emperor Franz Josef nominated Tegetthoff for his merits to the rank of Viceadmiral.

In 1868 Wilhelm von Tegetthoff advanced to Commander of the Austro-Hungarian Navy in the ministry of war in Vienna. He advanced the reforms of the navy, especially the development of the naval port of Pula.

Viceadmiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff died at April 7, 1871 and is buried in Graz.

In commemoration to Viceadmiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff a street in the 1^st district in Vienna get the name Tegetthoff-Strasse and on a place in the 2^nd district there is a monument for the viceadmiral.
