La cigogne blanche
La Cigogne blanche, parce qu'elle niche près de l'homme et revient sur son nid chaque année (il peut finir par dépasser 500 kg de brindilles diverses), est un oiseau symbolique du cycle des saisons. Dans le folklore de bien des régions et en particulier d'Alsace, région dont elle est devenue l'emblème, la cigogne est censée apporter les bébés en les portant dans un linge tenu par le bec.
Le symbole de l'Alsace est la cigogne blanche, qui depuis des siècles vit a l'état sauvage dans cette région.
Grande migratrice, elle revient tous les ans au printemps faire son nid dans ce coin de France qu'elle affectionne particulièrement. Nombreuses autrefois, on compte aujourd'hui les cigognes sur les doigts de la main. En 1932, il y avait encore quelques 150 couples et 400 jeunes mais en 1971, on ne recensait plus que 18 couples et 40 jeunes. Cette situation alarmante est due à l'assèchement des marais et à la pollution causés par le progrès. En conséquence, de nombreuses associations se sont formées pour la protection de l'environnement et un centre de réintroduction des cigognes a été créé dans un parc au pied des Vosges. Les cigognes reviennent peu à peu. On peut voir leurs nids sur les clochers des églises, les tours des villes et des villages et les cheminées des maisons.
Le retour de cet oiseau synonyme de fertilité est tout à fait symbolique.
Légendes
Depuis toujours, on dit que la cigogne amène les enfants à leur mère par la voie des airs. Ainsi, on raconte aux enfants que pour avoir un petit frère ou une petite sœur, il faut déposer un sucre sur le bord de la fenêtre (comme le corbeau de Jean de La Fontaine, la cigogne lâche son colis lorsqu'elle se saisit de la friandise).
En Alsace, on dit que si une cigogne vole en rase-mottes au-dessus d'une jeune femme, elle attendra un bébé dans l'année.

The white stork
The white Stork, because it nests near the man and returns on its nest every year (he can eventually exceed(overtake) 500 kg of diverse twigs), is a symbolic bird of the cycle of the seasons. The return of this synonymic bird of fertility is completely symbolic.
Legends
For a long time, we say that the stork brings the children to their mother by air. So, we tell to the children that to have a small brother or a small sister, it is necessary to put down(to deposit) a sugar on the edge of the window (as the crow of Jean de La Fontaine, the stork releases(leaves) its parcel when it seizes some candy).
In Alsace, we say that if a stork vole in hedgehopping over a young woman, it will be expecting a baby in the year.
