About This Item

Metso

The capercaillie is the biggest gallinaceous bird in Finland. The full-grown hen weights about 2 kilograms and the cock about 6 kilograms. The capercaillie lives in coniferous forests and it shuns humans and settled areas. It eats seeds, berries, parts of twigs and in winter pine needles and buds of seedlings. The impressive displays of capercaillies happens from march to may. The capercaillies cather for the displays on the same spot year after year.
Metso on maamme suurin kanalintu. Naaras eli koppelo painaa täysikasvuisena pari kiloa ja uros yleensä n. 6 kiloa. Metso on havumetsien lintu, joka hylkii asutusta ja ihmistä. Sen ravintona ovat siemenet, marjat, varpujen osat ja talvella männyn neulaset ja taimien silmut. Metsojen näyttävä ryhmäsoidin tapahtuu maalis-toukokuussa. Soitimelle metso kokoontuu vuodesta toiseen samalle paikalle.
