The roads are for everyone. Bicyclist have the same rights as motorist. Walkers walk on the left hand side of the road. Scooters and bicycles stay on the right as far as possible. In Maine they aren't allowed to go over 20 MPH.
Motorists passing bicyclists too closely create a dangerous situation, which does not allow cyclists maneuvering room to avoid hazards, and can cause a wind blast. Maine's new law requires motorists to give at least three feet when passing bicyclists!
Because bicyclists are slower and smaller than cars, a motorist doesn't need as much space or time to safely pass. The three-foot passing portion of the new law also allows motorists to cross a solid yellow centerline(s) to pass bicyclists when safe to do so.
The roads are for everyone. Remember to SEE, BE SEEN AND TO BE SAFE. Distractions, whether your in an automobile, riding a motorcycle, scooter or bicycle, or just walking, is what causes accidents. SO if we all pay attention we can prevent accidents.
Help us make our highways a safer place for all.
