The Sweetgrass Basket and the Palmetto Rose that it holds are Geo-Goodwill Ambassadors of the Town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The Sweetgrass Basket Geo-Goodwill Ambassador’s mission is to visit all 50 states and beyond, including Western Africa where this art form originated, to educate people about this unique cultural resource and the Town of Mount Pleasant. For more information on the Sweetgrass Baskets and basketmaker heritage, visit: (visit link) and www.townofmountpleasant.com .
Coil baskets of native sweetgrass and pine needles sewn with strips of palmetto leaf have been displayed for sale on stands along Highway 17 since the 1930s. This craft, handed down in certain families since the 1700s, originally was used on plantations in rice production. Unique to the lowcountry it represents one of the oldest West African art forms in America.
