Look for motorcycles!

The majority of car-motorcycle crashes are the driver’s fault. Most often, the driver either doesn’t see the motorcycle or misjudges its speed and/or distance and pulls out in front of it. When entering the highway and at intersections, especially when turning left, always double-check the cross traffic. Look for motorcycles, then look again.

Where are craches likely?

Left turns and Intersections are the most likely places for car or Motorcycle crashes to occur. Because of its smaller size, drivers often don’t see or misjudge the distance and speed of a motorcycle. Taking a second look for motorcycles at intersections lessens the chance of pulling out in front of them.

Blind spots

Motorcycles are narrow and can wind up in your blind spot in a hurry. To improve safety for everyone, be aware of your surroundings—and all vehicles around you. Make a visual check for motorcycles in your rear-view mirror and check your blind spot before changing lanes.

Hazardous road and weather conditions

Be extra careful sharing the road with motorcycles. Small objects in the road can force a motorcycle to take evasive action—slowing down or changing lanes to avoid potholes, wet leaves, fallen objects or railroad tracks. Don’t tailgate—give motorcycles a four-second following distance.

Share the road

Sharing the road doesn’t just mean driving on it together. It means giving others their fair share of it. A motorcycle takes up less space in the lane but needs more room to maneuver safely. Allow the motorcyclist a full lane width.

What can I do?

Help save a life by adopting a few defensive driving behaviors to improve your awareness of motorcycles.

1. Look for motorcycles…then look again. Look twice at intersections, especially when turning left.

2. Respect motorcyclists’ rights. Motorcycles have all the privileges of any vehicle on the road. Give motorcycles a full lane.

3. Anticipate a motorcyclist’s maneuvers. Motorcyclists may change lane positions in response to road conditions, weather or other factors. Anticipate evasive actions.

4. Allow plenty of following distance. Allow motorcycles a four-second following distance and room to respond to conditions on the road.

5. Check your blind spot. Make a visual check for motorcycles in your rear-view mirror and check your blind spot before changing lanes.
