This is collectible.
The first italian geocoin is a project where 13 italian cachers/teams are involved (Kingfisherteam, Barafondateam, Leo99, kdv, cmauri, kazuma, itamagellano, ilboss, genicogiorgi, i5fzi, vericol, rottonara and kirkadore).
The front of the coin (design by rottonara, ilboss and kingfisherteam) shows Galileo Galilei, one of the most important italian scientists, in excellent 3D detail. The sentence "EPPUR SI MUOVE" (And yet it does move) is a quotation from Galilei, after he had to swear off his thesis on pressure of the church. Legend has it that Galilei muttered this phrase after being forced to recant, in front of the Inquisition, his belief that the earth moved around the sun.
At that time, the dominant view among theologians in the Catholic Church was that the Earth is stationary, indeed was the center of the universe. Any challenge to that view was considered to be heresy, a crime punishable by death. For his views, Galileo was put under house arrest until his death, nine years after the trial.
The back side (design by kirkadore) shows Italy in the flag-colors surrounded by the EU-stars; yet another excellent map-flag combo. The coin was made in 4 different finishes: antique silver, polished silver, antique gold, and a two-tone antique gold/copper version. This is the antique silver version.
