The area was created by rock remains of Neogene sea which covered the Vienna basin 14-16 millions of years ago. During the strenght transgression of the sea the limestones of Mesozoic era were covered by the sands with broken stones and sandstones.
Sandberg was alternately the sea floor, beach and cliff. The sea was 60 metres deep with normal salinity (3,5 %). Now the area is world-known as a paleontological locality. Many fossils species have been found here. Some of them belonged to the sea organisms as a shells, oysters and echinuses, but also the seal bones, shark teeths and whale jaw-bone were found here.
The water streams brought here also the many earth-born animals such an ancient elephants, antilops and rhinos. Important discoveries include also the relics of ancient apes - the ancestors of todays gibons.
But the most important findings are the Dryopitecus teeths. Dryopithecus is an ancestor of anthropid ape (chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutang).
If you want to see these fossil finds, you should visit the Vienna Natural Museum or Slovak National Museum.

Uzemie tvoria horninove zvysky tretohorneho mora, ktore sa vo Viedenskej panve rozprestieralo pred 14-16 milionmi rokov. Pri transgresii (mohutnom zdvihnuti) mora boli na druhohorne vapence vodorovne ulozene piesky s vlozkami strkopieskov, pieskovce a brekcie.
Sandberg bol striedavo morskym dnom, plazou a utesom. More tu bolo hlboke az 60 metrov s normalnou salinitou (3,5 %). Dnes je to svetozname nalezisko neogennych skamenelin. Naslo sa tu velke mnozstvo druhov fosilnych (skamenelych) organizmov. Niektore patria morskym zivocichom - lasturniky, ustrice, jezovky, nasli sa tu kosti tulenov, zuby zralokov i sanka velryby. Vodne toky sem splavili aj velke mnozstvo zvyskov suchozemskych zivocichov - podobnych dnesnym nosorozcom, antilopam a psovitym selmam, ale taktiez chobotnatcov - mastodontov. Vyznamne su nalezy opic - prapredkov dnesnych indickych gibonov, ktoré tvoria spojivo medzi ludoopmi a opicami.
Medzi najvzacnejsie nalezy patria zuby Dryopiteka, ktory sa zaraduje k predchodcom dnesnych ludoopov (simpanz, gorila, orangutan). Zber na tejto lokalite prebiehal uz za cias Rakuska-Uhorska, preto sa vacsina starsich vyznamnych nalezov nachadza vo viedenskom prirodovednom muzeu. Novsie nalezy mozete obdivovat v zbierkach Slovenskeho narodneho muzea v Bratislave.
Na zalogovanie nalezu tejto earthcache musite splnit nasledovne podmienky:
• Ako dokaz vasej navstevy sa odfotte na uvedenych suradniciach so Sandbergom v pozadi a s GPS (ak ste sami, mozete odfotit Sandberg a vasu GPS). Fotografiu uploadnite do logu.
• Napiste mi mail cez profil, kde zodpoviete na nasledovne otazky:
- ako bola tato lokalita objavena?
- kolko druhov fosilii sa tu naslo?
- vymenujte aspon jednu pieskomilnu rastlinu, ktora tu rastie
Logy, ktore nesplnia vyssie uvedene podmienky, budu podla pravidiel zmazane. Neplatia ani stare fotky z predchadzajucich navstev lokality, na miesto musite ist fyzicky znova.
