Geocache Description:

An easy cache (by route from Burgate)with options for a longer walk.

This cache can be found at Burgate, once the home of Augustus John, the artist, near Fordingbridge. The settlement of Fordingbridge (just Forde then) was noted in the Domesday Book of 1066. Much of the current High Street and adjoining centre of town have developed since the late 17th and early 18th centuries when a series of fires devastated the town. It was once an important crossing point for the River Avon, and a junction of the Ringwood to Salisbury and Cranborne to Southampton roads. The River was, at one time, navigable from Christchurch to here and beyond.

This cache is near a bridge over the wonderful Hampshire Avon, but not the Great Bridge from which Fordingbridge derives it’s name. This bridge was built in 1950 to replace a cattle bridge, which was reputedly destroyed by a tank in WWII.

Footpaths to the cache can be accessed from Sandy Balls Holiday Park, Woodgreen Road, or for a cache and dash, the main A338 where parking is available outside Burgate School. Please DO NOT drive from the A338 along the farm track, which is PRIVATE and is a public footpath only.

Fordingbridge is well served by watering places. Our favourites? For coffee, snacks and meals, “River Kitchen” and the "Fig Tree", on the High St. On the A338, near to the cache is the Tudor Rose pub and in Woodgreen, there is the Horse and Groom, starting point for another cache. Otherwise, any of the local pubs or cafes will look after you well.

The cache is a tiny micro, with only space for a very small log sheet. You will need to bring your own pen or pencil. Take care with the container, and refix as you find it. Cache rating is for easiest approach (from Burgate). For other routes, you will need a map so you can assess your route. It DOES get wet over the meadows!

(New container type and clue from 13/8/14)
