XMAS2006 - 6 Gävlebocken

Detta var geocache nr 6 i en serie av 24, en slags Geocaching-Julkalender inför julen 2006.
De övriga 23 placerades ut på olika platser över hela vårt avlånga land.

This was geocache no 6 in a series of 24, a kind of Geocaching-Christmas Calender for the Christmas of 2006.
The remaining 23 were placed in various locations all over Sweden.

Bocken är en stor julsymbol i Gävle och därför ville vi gömma en julkalendercache i närheten av den. Här följer ett sammandrag av bockens historia.

Den första bocken i Gävle byggdes 1966 . Den var 13 meter hög, 7 meter lång och vägde 3 ton. Bocken kom på plats den 1 december och brann klockan 0.00 på nyårsnatten. 1971 lade Köpmännen ner bockverksamheten eftersom bocken bränts ner två år på följd. Då tog Naturvetenskapliga föreningen från Vasaskolan över den årliga traditionen.

Bocken hamnade i Guiness rekordbok 1985, då 12,5 meter hög. Året därpå tog Köpmännen upp bockbyggandet igen och sedan dess har det funnits två bockar varje år. 1988 blev det möjligt att spela på bocken på engelska oddslistor. I mars 1990 byggdes en bock till inspelningen av filmen ”Black Jack”. Vasaskolans bock kom med i Guiness rekordbok för andra gången 1993, då 16 meter hög. 1996 vaktades bocken för första gången av webbkamera.

The cache is hidden near the Gävle Christmas Goat. A short summary of the history of the goat follows.

The first goat was built in 1966. It was 13 meters high, 7 meter long and weighted 3 ton. The goat was in place from december 1:st untill midnight new years eve, when it was burnt down. 1971 students from Vasaskolan took over the yearly tradition of building the goat, after the merchants grow tired since their goat had been burnt down for two years in a row.

The goat ended up in the Guiness Book of Records in 1985, 12.5 meters high. The year after, the Merchants started building a goat again, and since then two goats are built every year. In 1988 it became possible to gamble on the goats survival. In 1993 the goat made a second appearence in the Guiness Book of Records. It was the goat built by students of Vasaskolan and it was 16 meters high. In 1996, a webcam guarded the goat for the first time.
