The Wrong Way (Auckland) Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Tramper Ted: The cache is indeed now behind a fence. The only way you could get to it is through the cafe on the ground floor of the building, then out into the courtyard, not very practical and likely to be quite exposed retrieving it, so we have decided to archive it.

Geocache Description:

A straight forward offset cache.

The above co-ordinates will take you to the start. Parking is available nearby. You will need to know the number of stamen and pods. Access to the sculpture is possible but care is required with traffic and gardens. Not recommended with children. You will be exposed to large numbers of mobile muggles but they will move on regularly in groups. Veiw the photo for the perfect counter measure. Final cache is (((the number of stamen less the height in meters of one of the tall red fibreglass poles)divided by two)plus four) meters away on a magnetic bearing of (the total number of stamen minus eight plus the number of stamen on one pod plus the height in meters of one of the tall red fibreglass poles).

For those very brave souls the original cache still remains in place. This location was regarded as very exposed and somewhat risky. If you choose this one the calculations are - (the total number of stamen less the height in meters of one of the tall red fibreglass poles)divided by two meters away on a magnetic bearing of (the total number of stamen multiplied by two plus the number of stamen on one pod plus the height in meters of one of the tall red fibreglass poles).

About the sculpture:

Positioned at the hub of one of the city's busiest gateways, the sculpture is seen by tens of thousands of motorists every day. The sculpture is located on a triangular piece of land facing Union Street and bounded by the Nelson Street off-ramp on the northern side and the Hobson Street on-ramp on the southern side. It is part of the urban aesthetics applied to the city's inner motorway system by Transit New Zealand as part of the upgrade of the Central Motorway Junction. Set on a two-metre high and six-metre diameter concrete base, the sculpture comprises ceramic-covered pods on which tall red fibreglass poles, representing pohutukawa stamen, are fitted. The spring-loaded polls, capable of individual 500 millimetre movements, have yellow elliptical tops that are lit internally with LED lights. These lights, together with up-lights at the base of the poles, makes the sculpture prominent at night. The sculpture is part of a pohutukawa theme that is particularly pertinent to the motorway at this point where it sweeps down to the Waitemata Harbour. To emphasise this, precast concrete panels on retaining walls of the motorway’s 'northern tie-in' - between Karangahape road and Victoria Park, have been decorated with pohutukawa flower ‘bursts'. NB Extra stealth is required when retrieving this cache. It is suggested you take a camera along as a decoy.
