I wanted to do something where I grew up....
A vestige of the last ice age, Oakland Lake was formed when the retreating glacier left a massive iceberg embedded in the debris of soil and stone. It is fed by the ravine's runoff and underground springs. It served as one of the earliest mill ponds on Long Island feeding the old Hicks Mill, owned by one of the original settlers of Bayside, John Hicks, son of a Plymouth Colonist, and a Flushing patentee.
Later known as Douglas Pond after the founder of Douglaston, in 1874 it became the water source for the City of Flushing. Oakland Lake and Ravine became protected environments under New York State's Wetlands Act in 1976
Oakland Lake Ravine is the side of the Park that one needs to walk down from. As a Cardozo HS student, I used to go sliding down the hills on cardboard or play superheroes--I was a late bloomer (a friend once found a machete sticking out of the ground once, hmmmm)
